Fermi Linux 7xtest alpha 06/18/01
This release is based on RedHat Linux 7.1 with the following changes. For
more details on the changes see farther below. Items with a * are Fermi
Linux change related. If no * then it is a generic RedHat 7.1 issue.
Please read this entire document before installing.

To make the install floppy. Put a scratch floppy in "/dev/fd0". Download
the above file and
dd if=bootnet.img of=/dev/fd0
Note that there is a "drivers" floppy image for "other drivers". See the
RedHat documentation for what is on this floppy.
1*. All errata as of June 16, 2001.
2*. autorpm support with fix for circular dependencies. I took the
original released version of RedHat and used autorpm to update to this
errata level and it worked ok.
3*. Basic workgroup support. The shell script at the end is missing.
This has the effect of NOT having ups/upd bootstrap support. Also
RPMS which were specific to and provided by the workgroup is also
missing.
4*. You should be able to install via nfs or ftp. Have not done many ftp
installs but they should work. Just did a ftp install and it worked
but it used text mode. Will try to preserve ftp installs but not
making any promises.
5*. Migrated the following rpms from 6.1.x . See below for details

6*. Got Nedit from RedHat powertools. This requires openmotif so got
openmotif from ICS. We will start with this version of openmotif
as it is what CDF is testing. More choices later.
7. Both text and graphical installs should work as long as they work
with the default RedHat install. The reason for the "if" is that the
normal RedHat installer will switch to "text" mode if it cannot do
graphical mode.

8*. No cdrom installs at the moment. Have to figure out how to make 2
cd's out of one install tree.
9. SSH support is via openssh which is installed by default.
9a*. Fermi Kerberos rpm in the really near future.
10*. NO afs yet. Ibm(Transarc) client does not work.
11. Adaptec scsi support is very poor. RedHat is working on this. I
suggest that if you have Adaptec scsi that you NOT install RedHat
7.1.anything. In some cases it will not even install.
12. ISA network cards are NOT auto detected by default, either during
the install or afterwards.
13. Install turns on IDE DMA by default. This can cause some
cdroms/disks to be "sad". So if you have problems during the install
in particular with it "hanging" the suggested fix is to turn dma off
during the install. This can be done by at the install prompt typing
linux ide=nodma
or
text ide=nodma
14. RedHat has already announced a new errata kernel. I have been
waiting for it to be released for quite a while. So do not get too
attatched to the existing kernel as it will be replaced soon.
15. inetd and /etc/inetd.conf have been replaced with xinetd and /etc/
xinetd.d/ . Similar features but done differently.
16. Other RedHat features are still there.
17. Upgrades are not disallowed by I am not sure you will get what you
want. So please do NOT upgrade yet.
18. gcc is 2.96.3 straight from RedHat.
