Fermi Linux 7xtest beta 07/23/01

This release is based on RedHat Linux 7.1 with the following changes. For
more details on the changes see farther below. Items with a * are Fermi
Linux change related. If no * then it is a generic RedHat 7.1 issue.
Please read this entire document before installing.

*Locations

        linux.fnal.gov:/export/linux/7xtest/i386/

Ftp will not be available for this beta.
Will add at a later time.

        ftp://linux.fnal.gov/linux/7xtest/i386/

*Floppy image locations

        ftp://linux.fnal.gov/linux/7xtest/i386/images/bootnet.img

To make the install floppy. Put a scratch floppy in "/dev/fd0". Download
the above file and

        dd if=bootnet.img of=/dev/fd0

Note that there is a "drivers" floppy image for "other drivers". See the
RedHat documentation for what is on this floppy.

The following has been updated. Some of the items are the same as before
even thought nothing changed. This is because the info is important and I
did not want to have to tell people to go and look at the older release notes.

There is more detail at the end.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
1*. All RedHat errata as of July 23, 2001.

2*. Full workgroup support. The shell script at the end now works.
All the RPMS which were specific to and provided by the workgroup
need to be tested and checked. Note that some rpms are now part of
the main release. These are located at /RedHat/RPMS. If you want the
version that you used to use please send me the rpm names and I will
put them back, otherwise you get the official RedHat version. I sent
mail to the workgroup liasions already about this.

3*. You are able to install only via nfs. Ftp installs do not
work at this time. Still working on this. Should be back at a later
     date.

4*. The default for firewall is off. You can still select what you want.
If a workgroup wants a different default then I can change it. You
can also have more of the "detail" already defined.

5. Both text and graphical installs should work as long as they work
with the default RedHat install. The reason for the "if" is that the
normal RedHat installer will switch to "text" mode if it cannot do
graphical mode. Note that ftp installs only work in text mode.

6.* Cdrom installs are now available. Will post images to
     ftp:/linux1.fnal.gov/linux/7xtest/iso/

7a*. Fermi Kerberos rpm depends on the Fermi Kerberos ups/upd product. It
has not been ported to 7.x yet. The existing Fermi Kerberos rpm will
with the the exception that it will not be able to enable incoming
services. This is because 6.x used inetd and 7x uses xinetd.conf. You
can install these manually if needed. The 6.1 kerberos rpms are in
     /contrib/kerberos/

10*. There is a test afs in /contrib/openafs. This only works with the
single cpu kernel. We are waiting for another version from Transarc.

11. Adaptec scsi support is still poor, just not as bad as it was.
If your install hangs and you have adaptec scsi then reboot with
"linux apic" at the install boot prompt. This has helped at least
     one user.

12. Install turns on IDE DMA by default. This can cause some
cdroms/disks to be "sad". So if you have problems during the install
in particular with it "hanging" the suggested fix is to turn dma off
during the install. This can be done by at the install prompt typing

        linux ide=nodma

or

        text ide=nodma

13. inetd and /etc/inetd.conf have been replaced with xinetd and /etc/
xinetd.d/ . Similar features but done differently.

14. Other RedHat features are still there.

15. Upgrades are not disallowed by I am not sure you will get what you
want. So please do NOT upgrade yet.

16. The current kernel is still 2.4.3 . There is a test kernel in
     /contrib/kernel/

17. UPS/UPD bootstrap is now in the form of 2 rpms. The first contains the
actual code. The 2nd contains a config file. There are 2 choices for
the config file rpms. One puts ups/upd in /local and the other in /fnal.
This is very new so they are not installed by default except for the OSS
workgroup. They are located in /contrib/upsupdbootstrap/ . You need to
install upsupdbootstrap-2.2-1.i386.rpm and then a ups/upd config file rpm.
These do NOT check if you already have a ups/upd install there already, so
be carefull. These are installed via the standard ups/upd bootstrap
product. If your workgroup wants to install ups/upd someplace else that
is no problem as this product was designed to be very customizable.
So if you have a different config file that you want me to use then
please send it to me. For more info on this topic see
     www.fnal.gov/docs/products/bootstrap .

     upsupdbootstrap-local-2.2-1.i386.rpm installs in /local/ups/

     upsupdbootstrap-generic-2.2-1.i386.rpm goes in /fnal/ups/

   rpm -i upsupdbootstrap-2.2-1.i386.rpm upsupdbootstrap-local-2.2-1.i386.rpm

or

   rpm -i upsupdbootstrap-2.2-1.i386.rpm upsupdbootstrap-generic-2.2-1.i386.rpm

Please Go forth and test and report back.
