Fermi Linux 7xtest RC1(Release Candidate 1) 08/20/01 & 08/22/01

This release is based on RedHat Linux 7.1 with the following changes. For
more details on the changes see farther below. Items with a * are Fermi
Linux change related. If no * then it is a generic RedHat 7.1 issue.
Please read this entire document before installing.

*Locations

        linux2.fnal.gov:/export/linux/7xtest/i386/

Ftp will not be available for this beta.
Will add at a later time.

*Floppy image locations

        ftp://linux.fnal.gov/linux/7xtest/i386/images/bootnet.img

To make the install floppy. Put a scratch floppy in "/dev/fd0". Download
the above file and

        dd if=bootnet.img of=/dev/fd0

Note that there is a "drivers" floppy image for "other drivers". See the
RedHat documentation for what is on this floppy.

The following has been updated. Some of the items are the same as before
even though nothing changed. This is because the info is important and I
did not want to have to tell people to go and look at the older release notes.

There is more detail at the end.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
0*. Fixed a problem where the 2.4.3-12 errata install kernel was
passing a umask of 000 to the installer. This causes all files
, which are created on the fly and not belonging to a rpm, to be
created with permissions of rw-rw-rw. Fixed via a change to anaconda
the installer. Either version of the install floppy should work now.

1*. All RedHat errata as of August 20, 2001.

2*. Full workgroup support still. Workgroups please test. The following
workgroups have been tested by us as they are "ours".

	Fermi Generic Desktop (formerly FermiStandAlone)
	OSS
	ConsoleServer
	GenericFarm
	Farms

3. UPS/UPD bootstrap is now automatically installed as in 6.1.x.

   		upsupdbootstrap-2.2-2.i386.rpm and one of

		upsupdbootstrap-local-2.2-2.i386.rpm
		upsupdbootstrap-generic-2.2-2.i386.rpm

Each of the workgroups that installed ups/upd before now has it
automatically installed again into the same area as before. A update
still does NOT install over an old version it just ignores the install
     request.

The workgroups that install upsupdbootstrap are

 		Astro
 		CDFlevel3
 		CDFonline
 		CMSdesktop
 		CMSserver
 		ConsoleServer
 		Farms
 		Fermi Generic Desktop (FermiStandAlone)
 		FOCUS
 		GenericFarm
 		ODS
 		RIP
 		SDSS
 		Theory

4*. Upgrades

These should work now. Note that upgrades requirements for both
disk and swap can be large.

You select a "workgroup upgrade" choice from the
"Install/Fermi Upgrade" scroll window in GUI mode.
This is what you want to select. There are 2 choices
for each workgroup. One that does a new install and
		one that does a upgrade.

The "RedHat Upgrade" selection will give you a "RedHat"
upgrade which only upgrades existing packages to new versions
if new versions exist. It gives NO new packages other than
ones it deems necessary. It is NOT what you want.

5a*. Fermi Kerberos rpm depends on the Fermi Kerberos ups/upd product. It
has not been ported to 7.x yet. The existing Fermi Kerberos rpm will
with the the exception that it will not be able to enable incoming
services. This is because 6.x used inetd and 7x uses xinetd.conf. You
can install these manually if needed. The 6.1 kerberos rpms are in
/contrib/kerberos/. If you have questions about kerberos on
Fermi Linux please send mail to kerberos-users@fnal.gov .

6*. afs is in /RedHat/RPMS/. This should work with both
smp and non smp kernels. This is the openafs version vs the Transarc
product. We use what works. The following workgroups will get afs
installed by default just as in 6.1.x .

	Astro
	FnaluInteractive
	ODS
	OSS
	Theory
	CMSdesktop
	CMSserver
	CMSfarm

7*. New RPMS have been created to "fix" things.

	zz_libg2c.a_change-2.0-1.i386.rpm
Fixes the lack of a sym link to /usr/lib/libg2c.a
This was a problem with the prior version of g77 too.
		All g77 installs get zz_libg2c.a_change-2.0-1.i386.rpm.

	zz_tex_tweaks-1.0-1.i386.rpm
Changes the paper default size to US.

			Astro
                        Theory
                        CPD
                        FermiStandAlone
                        OSS

	zz_emacs_link-1.0-1.i386.rpm
This lets xemacs be used in place of emacs.

	zz_airo350_conf-1.1-1.i386.rpm
Modifies the config file for the airo350 so that it works.
		Modification from Cisco web page.
Not installed by default. If you want it you have to
		install it.

	zz_a2ps_stdout-1.0-1.i386.rpm
This will make a2ps default to stdout instead
		of the printer.
		Installed by default for

			Astro
                	Theory
                	CPD
                	FermiStandAlone
                	OSS

	zz_no_colorls-1.0-1.noarch.rpm
This will change the default ls behavior to no color
Only in CDF workgroups by default. If other want it
		just ask.

	zz_lang_collate-1.0-2.noarch.rpm
This will configure the LC_COLLATE in /etc/sysconfig/i18n to "C" which is what the default was on Fermi Linux 6.1.x.
Installed by default in CPD, OSS, FermiStandAlone.

        upsupdbootstrap-2.2-2.i386.rpm and one of
	upsupdbootstrap-local-2.2-2.i386.rpm
	upsupdbootstrap-generic-2.2-2.i386.rpm
		Fermi Ups/Upd bootstrap.

	openafs-fermi
		Fermi version of Openafs client.

8*. RPMS changed.

	serialconsole-1.0-3.noarch.rpm

Took out the "file" entry for /dev/console. This
was making a upgrade think that it needed to install
it for everyone. In most cases this is ok as the
rpm makes a console out of both the serial port and
the first virtual tty. But some systems had problems
with this. If we still need to define /dev/console
we need to do so via the shell script.

9*. New RPMS which were obtained from other places.

		acroread-4.05-6.i386.rpm
		acroread-plugin-4.05-6.i386.rpm

			From RedHat powertools 7.0

10*. RPMS moved

These have been moved to /updates/removed/
because they were being installed automatically on
all updates. These are quite large and increase the
size of a upgrade by about 140MB.

11a.	Documentation

Documentation has been added in /contrib/dell.laptops/
	for information on dell laptops.

The Cisco aironet 350 does not work out of the box. You need
to install the zz_airo350_conf-1.1-1.i386.rpm rpm to fix the
config file. The aironet 4800 and 340 do work out of the
box and do NOT need this rpm.

________________________________________________________________________
Older info which is still relavant.

1. Adaptec scsi support is still poor, just not as bad as it was.
If your install hangs and you have adaptec scsi then reboot with
"linux apic" at the install boot prompt. This has helped at least
     one user.

2. Install turns on IDE DMA by default. This can cause some
cdroms/disks to be "sad". So if you have problems during the install
in particular with it "hanging" the suggested fix is to turn dma off
during the install. This can be done by at the install prompt typing

        linux ide=nodma

or

        text ide=nodma

3. inetd and /etc/inetd.conf have been replaced with xinetd and /etc/
xinetd.d/ . Similar features but done differently.

4. Other RedHat features are still there.

5. The current kernel is still 2.4.3 . The test kernel in /contrib/kernel has
been removed as it is too old. New test version soon.

6*. You are able to install only via nfs. Ftp installs do not
work at this time. Still working on this. Should be back at a later
     date.

7*. The default for firewall is off still. You can still select what you want.

8. Both text and graphical installs should work as long as they work
with the default RedHat install. The reason for the "if" is that the
normal RedHat installer will switch to "text" mode if it cannot do
graphical mode. Note that ftp installs only work in text mode.

9.* Cdrom installs are now available. Will post images to
     ftp:/linux1.fnal.gov/linux/7xtest/iso/

Please Go forth and test and report back.
