Fermi Linux 7.1.1 08/29/01

This release is based on RedHat Linux 7.1 with the following changes. For
more details on the changes see farther below. Items with a * are Fermi
Linux change related. If no * then it is a generic RedHat 7.1 issue.
Please read this entire document before installing.

*Locations

        linux2.fnal.gov:/export/linux/711/i386/
or
        linux.fnal.gov:/export/linux/711/i386/

Ftp will not be available for this beta.
Will add at a later time.

*Floppy image locations

        ftp://linux.fnal.gov/linux/711/i386/images/bootnet.img

To make the install floppy. Put a scratch floppy in "/dev/fd0". Download
the above file and

        dd if=bootnet.img of=/dev/fd0

Install Net floppies are available from both Yolanda (on WH8NW) and FCC PREP(3west).

Note that there is a "drivers" floppy image for "other drivers". See the
RedHat documentation for what is on this floppy.

The following has been updated. Some of the items are the same as before
even though nothing changed. This is because the info is important and I
did not want to have to tell people to go and look at the older release notes.

See /RELEASE-NOTES for the RedHat release notes.
See /Fermi.documentation/ for info on what has changed compared to RedHat 7.1 .
See /FERMI.README for a tour of the nfs/ftp/cdrom install areas.

There is more detail at the end.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
-1.* The Release string in /etc/fermi-release now says 7.1.1 .

0*. Fixed a problem where the 2.4.3-12 errata install kernel was
passing a umask of 000 to the installer. This causes all files
which are created on the fly and not belonging to a rpm, to be
created with permissions of rw-rw-rw. Fixed via a change to anaconda
the installer. Either version of the install floppy should work now.

1*. All RedHat errata as of August 27, 2001.

2*. Upgrades

Note that upgrades requirements for both disk and swap can be large.

You select a "workgroup upgrade" choice from the
"Install/Fermi Upgrade" scroll window in GUI mode.
This is what you want to select. There are 2 choices
for each workgroup. One that does a new install and
	one that does a upgrade.

The "RedHat Upgrade" selection will give you a "RedHat"
upgrade which only upgrades existing packages to new versions
if new versions exist. It gives NO new packages other than
ones it deems necessary. It is NOT what you want.

3a*. Fermi Kerberos rpm depends on the Fermi Kerberos ups/upd product which
has been ported to Fermi Linux 7.1.x . It is included in this release. All workgroups who wish it be included please contact me.
     It is located in /contrib/kerberos/

4*. afs is in /RedHat/RPMS/. This should work with both
smp and non smp kernels. This is the openafs version vs the Transarc
product. We use what works. The following workgroups will get afs
installed by default just as in 6.1.x .

	Astro
	FnaluInteractive
	ODS
	OSS
	Theory
	CMSdesktop
	CMSserver
	CMSfarm

5*. The problem that Dane was having with the upsupdbootstrap has been
fixed. The upsupdbootstrap was using commands that did not exist
during the install. This rpm has been moved to the workgroup area.

6.* The latest version of flpr is included. It is located in
/Fermi/RPMS/ . It is supported by it's author. The ups/upd version of
flpr is still installed via the ups/upd bootstrap if it was selected.
________________________________________________________________________
Older info which is still relavant.

1. Adaptec scsi support is still poor, just not as bad as it was.
If your install hangs and you have adaptec scsi then reboot with
"linux apic" at the install boot prompt. This has helped at least
     one user.

2. Install turns on IDE DMA by default. This can cause some
cdroms/disks to be "sad". So if you have problems during the install
in particular with it "hanging" the suggested fix is to turn dma off
during the install. This can be done by at the install prompt typing

        linux ide=nodma

or

        text ide=nodma

3. inetd and /etc/inetd.conf have been replaced with xinetd and /etc/
xinetd.d/ . Similar features but done differently.

4. Other RedHat features are still there.

5. The current kernel is still 2.4.3 . The test kernel in /contrib/kernel has
been removed as it is too old. New test version soon.

6*. You are able to install only via nfs. Ftp installs do not
work at this time. Still working on this. Should be back at a later
     date.

7*. The default for firewall is off still. You can still select what you want.

8. Both text and graphical installs should work as long as they work
with the default RedHat install. The reason for the "if" is that the
normal RedHat installer will switch to "text" mode if it cannot do
graphical mode. Note that ftp installs only work in text mode.

9.* Cdrom installs are now available. Will post images to
     ftp:/linux1.fnal.gov/linux/7xtest/DONOTEXPORT/iso/

Please Go forth and test and report back.
